In March of this year we installed a new state of the art powder paint system in our main manufacturing facility here in Westfield. This new paint system is almost exclusively dedicated to the painting of commercial finned tube enclosures and accessories and demonstrates our commitment to this market.
The installation required a significant capital investment and many months of planning to ensure the entire process went smoothly with as little disruption to our daily manufacturing as possible. We believe this was achieved and are pleased to say we have been operating the new paint line for several months.
The new system provides some noteworthy improvements, the first being a paint finish with enhanced durability and corrosion resistance. Additionally, the new process substantially reduces any adverse impact our painting operation has on the environment. We now reclaim and reuse about 80-90% of any powder over spray, and since the process uses no solvents, almost no pollutants of any kind are discharged to the atmosphere. This is a very ecological friendly paint system that we can be proud of and was one of major deciding factors for choosing this type of system!!!
In order to give you a feel for how this new paint system operates we have developed a short three minute video that explains the process. The video was developed by Don Pratt, Director of our Mestek Institute training facility and is narrated by Larry Desmarais, Mestek Vice President of Westfield Manufacturing.

During the past few years Sterling has actively been supporting the concept of radiant ceiling cooling. This technology has been slow to spread from Europe to the United States. This echnology offers some unique advantages including green building credits, operational efficiency and improved comfort conditions. There is also the ability to retrofit older, unairconditioned buildings with limited ceiling heights and/or plenum spaces relative to current HVAC systems.
Sterling has been involved with the renovation of the S.T. Dana Building (School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan) and Phase 1 of this sizable project (100,000 sq. ft.) has recently been completed. Radiant ceiling cooling fit the criteria for the renovation very well. Installation of hydronic piping rather then potentially large ductwork was seen as a distinct advantage. Another critical factor was the "quietness" of the radiant ceiling cooling system as many of the areas being renovated were office and teaching lab spaces.
Sterling has also supplied radiant ceiling cooling panels to a "proof of concept" project at Pennsylvania State University. This project details "dedicated outdoor air systems" and is under the direction of Stanley Mumma, Ph. D., P.E. Dr. Mumma is currently on the faculty of Architectural Engineering at Pennsylvania State University and is also a member of ASHRAE. Details of this
project can be viewed at www.doas.psu.edu.
As an independent proponent of radiant ceiling cooling, I have found this site to be highly educational and I would encourage you to spend a few minutes visiting it. I would also recommend this site to any design engineers who may be considering radiant ceiling cooling but who need to get a better understanding of the concept.
We are also presently working on four other major radiant cooling project leads including a UCLA project with 48,000 sq ft of active panel.
